Meditation for Drummers, Meditation 4. Zepparella Drummer Clementine for ZLC.

you hello I'm Clementine and welcome to this uh Perella Learning Channel this is my series on meditation for parameters let's see we've done three meditations where we have experimented with our awareness putting our awareness on our breath and then finding that wider awareness that's kind of the ground of being that that open awareness of the space in our existence so in the first video we learned how to keep our attention on sensation on the sensation of breath coming in and out and starting to focus our awareness quiet the mind or at least allow the mind to do what it does but keep training it to bring it back to that attention in the second video we found that other awareness that background awareness that awareness of being of the stillness the ground of being behind all of the the mind stuff there's a wider awareness there and in the third video we experimented with what it was like to allow things to rise and fall but to not react to them whether they're Pleasant or unpleasant or sort of hidden or NAM or neutral no matter what we found we just observed we just allowed what was rising to rise and we watched it either stay or go so I think you as a musician can probably guess why being nonreactive would be a very helpful thing when you're trying to achieve that beautiful flow state of perfect musical licks or creative expression and we're gonna figure that out by doing it find something that you can make a sound with so I'm sitting at my alesis drums here you can sit at a real drum kit or you could have a shaker you know something that you can even your hands just even clapping something where you can make sound and disrupt our meditative state a little bit or possibly disrupt our meditative state with sound so go ahead and make yourself real comfortable close your eyes get into your meditation posture the one that you've chosen and just arrived as I've shown you and use your breath as I've shown you to begin to fill up the space in the body arrive into the body and begin to narrow your focus onto the breath just as the beautiful tool that the breath is to begin to narrow our focus to quiet our attention to bring ourselves here into focus notice what's here notice any battle against what's here notice any feeling of trying or achieving and fall into that wide awareness you can trouble back on your breath as you breathe in filling the space in the body and as you breathe out falling into the awareness of all of the space in the body miss awareness thoughts rise sounds come through sensations emotions who is it who observes these things what is it who observes the rising and falling and now into this silence into the stillness I'm going to play a little click sound so now let's watch what happens when this clip arrives how is the experience different now than before that sound happened what grows while the sound was happening was there an aversion to the sudden sound was there since that you wanted to count it let's try that again what rose that time is there a twinge that I stopped the click between bars how has the the field of awareness changed with that activity and now in the clip begins what I'd like you to do is I'd like you to make a sound on that little bell on the one I'm gonna play along with my kick drum kind of guide you and then I'll let go and you can continue on all the time staying in this awareness taking a breath allowing awareness allowing what rises to rise just paying attention just observing what happened to this field of awareness says he began to make it noise what happened to the field of awareness when you began to move the body to make the sound what did you notice about the way that you made the sound is there a judgment about the timekeeping was that their feeling of that verge our judgment of failure and now let's hear is there anything here that wasn't here before we started listening before we started how does it feel to allow it is here to be here without trying to change it noticing noticing what's here what rose and now I wouldn't ask you to just make a sound the same sound on the one without the click at the temple you feel starting now and now complete and what was that like what Ruis when you didn't have a guide what did that feel like was there comforter uncomfortable where's their frustration or knees again we're just noticing and now taking a breath just let all of that go and holding that space that awareness as we open our eyes look around the room how much information is in stillness how much information is in the rising and falling of experience that we never pay attention to and we learn we learn about ourselves about playing our instrument about being in the world thank you so much for watching lots of fun
